Nontopological fractional fermion number in the Jackiw-Rossi model

چکیده
We compute the vacuum fermion current in $(2+1)$ dimensional Jackiw-Rossi model by using $1/m$ expansion. The is expressed through a weighted $\eta$-function with matrix weight. In presence of such weight, usual proof topological nature $\eta(0)$ not longer applicable. Direct computations confirm following surprising result: number induced vortices \textit{not} topological.

Nontopological finite temperature induced fermion number.
We show that while the zero temperature induced fermion number in a chiral sigma model background depends only on the asymptotic values of the chiral field, at finite temperature the induced fermion number depends also on the detailed shape of the chiral background. We resum the leading low temperature terms to all orders in the derivative expansion, producing a simple result that can be interp...

متن کاملAdler-bell-jackiw Anomaly and Fermion-number Breaking in the Presence of a Magnetic Monopole
In ( V A) theories, fermion number is broken in the presence of the 't Hooft-Polyakov magnetic monopole through the Adler-Bell-Jackiw anomaly. An exactly solvable zeroth-order approximation for evaluating Green functions of zero-angular-momentum fermions in the presence of a monopole is developed in the case of an SU(2) model with massless left-handed fermions. Within this approximation the den...
متن کاملFermion production despite fermion number conservation
Lattice proposals for a nonperturbative formulation of the Standard Model easily lead to a global U(1) symmetry corresponding to exactly conserved fermion number. The absence of an anomaly in the fermion current would then appear to inhibit anomalous processes, such as electroweak baryogenesis in the early universe. One way to circumvent this problem is to formulate the theory such that this U(...
متن کاملSignatures of the Adler–Bell–Jackiw chiral anomaly in a Weyl fermion semimetal
Weyl semimetals provide the realization of Weyl fermions in solid-state physics. Among all the physical phenomena that are enabled by Weyl semimetals, the chiral anomaly is the most unusual one. Here, we report signatures of the chiral anomaly in the magneto-transport measurements on the first Weyl semimetal TaAs. We show negative magnetoresistance under parallel electric and magnetic fields, t...
